Most people know that they should drink lots of water on a daily basis. The common question however becomes, how much should you drink per day? One way to calculate your individual body requirements is to take your weight in pounds, divide it by 2 and the answer represents the amount of fluid ounces you should have in one day. For example, if you weigh 150lbs, you would divide that by 2 and your answer is 75. This means you need to drink a minimum of 75 oz. of water per day. This is a more individualized calculation than the standard 8 glasses per day that is often recommended. Since weight can differ so greatly person to person, water requirement should follow suit. It is also important to note that there are some things in our daily life that will increase our water requirements further. For every coffee and alcoholic beverage you consume, add 1 additional glass of water to your calculated daily requirement.
Our bodies are made up of 70% water and it is imperative to our overall health. In fact, one can survive weeks without food, but only a few days without water. Water helps the body digest, improves circulation, ensures proper nerve function and improves the body’s ability to eliminate waste.
Here are a few tips to help ensure you are getting your daily requirement.
1. Start your day with 1 large glass of water; in time you will come to crave that water first thing in the morning.
2. Drink at least 2 glasses of water with each meal
3. Keep a stainless steel water bottle at your desk or with you during your day
4. If you do not like the taste of water, cut up some fresh fruits and add that to a water jug in your fridge. This will leach a wonderful hint of fresh fruits. Some great fruits to try include oranges, strawberries and cranberries.
